Across the globe – (As of November 20, 2007)

  • An estimated 33.4 million people live with HIV/AIDS..
  • An estimated 2.5 million new HIV infections in 2007. 

The equivalent to 7,945 people/day, 331/hour... more than 5/minute... almost 1 every 10 seconds.

  • An estimated 2.1 million people died of AIDS in 2007

In Canada

  • More than 9 people will become HIV positive each day In 2008
  • An estimated 68,000 people live with HIV/AIDS in Canada—a 17% increase over the estimated number in 2006.
  • Approximately 27% of people living with HIV/AIDS are not aware that they are infected.
  • Women account for 25% of all new HIV diagnoses.
  • Heterosexuals account for more than 57% of all new HIV diagnoses
  • A total of 63,604 diagnoses of HIV infection have been reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada from November 1985, (when reporting began) up to June 30, 2007.
  • More than 13,350 people have died of AIDS since November 1985

In Quebec

  • Up to 20,000 people are HIV positive, almost enough to fill the Bell Centre in Montreal
  • Over 6,000 of them have been diagnosed with AIDS.
  • 33.5% of people living with HIV are heterosexual.
  • Quebec has 50% of all AIDS cases among women and children in Canada.
  • It is estimated that 730 people will become HIV positive this year... 2 people a day... 1 person every 12 hours...

The new therapies?

  • Up to 30 pills per day (sometimes even more).
  • Time and food restrictions.
  • Toxic side effects and complications.
  • Resistance to the drugs for many.
  • No drugs can cure AIDS.

A Hard Reality

Isolation, exclusion and poverty are a daily reality for many people living with HIV/AIDS.

Despite decades of public education and prevention programming, the number of people living with HIV continues to rise. There is still no known cure for AIDS.
